The Instructional Design Specialist 1 supports accessible course development across the College of Public Health. Working under the guidance of the Instructional Design Coordinator, this role focuses on digital accessibility remediation, course build support, and quality assurance for online and hybrid courses. The position helps prepare courses on schedule and ensures content aligns with college standards, accessibility expectations, and instructional design best practices.

The Instructional Design Specialist 1 bridges the gap between student assistants and more senior instructional design/accessibility roles. The position assumes ownership of defined work packages (e.g., formatting documents, performing accessibility checks, updating Canvas modules), while escalating complex issues to senior staff.

The role supports instructor readiness, improves consistency and accessibility of course materials, and contributes to compliance with ADA Title II and WCAG 2.1 A/AA expectations. Success will be measured by on‑time course launches, reduced rework, and consistent application of accessibility and quality standards.

70% Digital Accessibility Support and Remediation

  • Apply foundational accessibility practices to documents, slides, CarmenCanvas pages, and media (headings, lists, alt text, descriptive links, color contrast).
  • Conduct basic accessibility checks (automated and manual) of online course content and identify issues requiring remediation or escalation.
  • Prepare and verify captions and transcripts for videos; assist with accessible document formatting (Word, PowerPoint, PDFs).
  • Convert or reformat instructional materials into accessible templates and track remediation tasks.
  • Support collegewide compliance with ADA Title II and WCAG 2.1 A/AA under the guidance of senior staff.

20% Instructional Design and Course Build Support

  • Build and update modules, pages, assignments, and assessments in CarmenCanvas using established templates and specifications.
  • Assist with preparing basic media and learning assets, including light video editing and file preparation.
  • Conduct course readability, navigation, and broken‑link checks as part of readiness review cycles.

5% Faculty Support, Communication and Project Coordination

  • Follow established procedures to complete assigned tasks within defined project scopes.
  • Communicate with instructors and team members on routine matters such as requesting files, confirming updates, or reporting task status.
  • Maintain organized task lists and document progress under the direction of the Instructional Design Coordinator.
  • Assist with simple, procedural updates to internal guides, templates, or checklists as instructed.

5% Other

  • Other duties as assigned to support departmental projects and operations

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Fundamental knowledge of concepts related to digital accessibility, ADA Title II and WCAG 2.1 A/AA
  • Basic knowledge instructional design principles and learning technologies; ability to follow set procedures and work on projects of limited scope with supervision.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., CarmenCanvas) and Microsoft 365/Teams. 
  • Attention to detail; organization; ability to manage tasks across multiple courses with guidance. 
  • Clear written and verbal communication; ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders in a professional manner. 
  • Introductory knowledge of digital accessibility (WCAG 2.1 A/AA concepts) and willingness to learn institutional testing/remediation practices. 
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Experience with Ally or other LMS accessibility scanners
  • Experience building content in CarmenCanvas (modules, pages, assignments) or another LMS.
  • Exposure to video editing or media production and familiarity with captioning/transcript workflows.
  • Experience conducting simple QA checks using established checklists.

**This position is contingent upon funding and will end on or before a 15-week term of employment.**


Additional Information:

Ray Rate: $22.93/hr

Location: This is a fully remote position; occasional evening or weekend work may be required near course launch windows.
