Scope of Job
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the UTRGV UTeach program in the College of Sciences beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. Responsibilities involve teaching and/or supervising undergraduate students in courses and field experiences related to preservice teacher development. Primary responsibilities include teaching field-based courses which students take in their pursuit of teacher certification, working with local area public school administrators who accept students for field experiences, working with local area public school teachers who serve as mentors for the students, and conducting field observations of the students. Additional duties include student mentoring, induction support, and other program related tasks and service activities. The position is for a three-year appointment, renewable based on performance.

UTRGV UTeach is a middle and high school mathematics and science teacher preparation and certification program that promotes inquiry-based learning and instruction. We prepare highly skilled, inspiring educators with deep subject expertise through integrated and cohesive coursework with early and consistent community-based teaching experiences. UTRGV UTeach is one of the largest UTeach programs in the nation, and as of Spring 2025, we have produced 526 highly prepared STEM graduates, an estimated 90% of whom entered the teaching profession.

M.S. in mathematics or mathematics education from an accredited university

Additional Information
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
