This is a fantastic opportunity for two recent UWE Bristol graduates to get real-world, hands-on experience of working in a busy, dynamic team within a large academic library.
We are looking for two motivated recent graduates to join our Discovery and Resourcing Team in a developmental graduate intern role. The Discovery and Resourcing team works to ensure that content (e.g. online books and journal articles), and the systems that support access to that content, is effectively managed so that our students and staff can access what they need, when they need it, without difficulty. The team also provides help and support to Doctoral students and research staff with open access publishing and research data preservation.
These posts are based at our lively Frenchay campus where we have invested in the latest facilities and resources to give both our staff and students access to everything they need to succeed.
About you
- You will be a strong communicator with attention to detail, who enjoys working with others and using your creativity to achieve results.
- You will have a desire to learn, be flexible in your approach and have a positive attitude.
- You will have a good understanding of customer service and excellent organisational skills.
- You will have good IT skills including using Microsoft 365 tools such as Outlook, Excel, Teams and confidence in conducting web‑based searches to locate accurate and relevant information.
- You will be graduating from UWE, Bristol in your first degree in summer 2026 or will have graduated from UWE, Bristol in your first degree in 2025 or 2024.
This post requires no prior information or library work experience, as it is designed to provide experience of working in a large department.
About these roles
We have two full-time intern posts available – Content and Discovery Intern and Open Research Services Intern.
Content and Discovery intern
Content and Discovery Services provides access to a large portfolio of information resources to UWE students and staff and looks after the systems, services and processes that support the provision of access, e.g. the Library Management System (Alma), and Reading List software. The library offer at UWE is primarily digital, so much of the work involves working with digital collections.
You will work in a team of Library Assistants supporting collections and acquisitions. Examples of tasks in this role include:
- Supporting academic staff in using the Reading List software to create reading lists, and producing training materials/promotional materials to support reading lists (e.g. videos, FAQs)
- Reviewing reading lists created by academic staff, checking that correct links are in place, obtaining items that are not in stock, and recommending digitisation of chapters where appropriate.
- Placing orders for information resources on the Library Management System (Alma).
- Running statistical reports following pre-defined instructions, e.g. collating usage statistics to support collections management decision making.
You will use the Library Management System and Content Management System in your day-to-day work, e.g. to support record maintenance and the general management of library materials.
Open Research Services Intern
This post sits within Open Research Services, in UWE Library and Learning Services’ Discovery and Resourcing team. Open Research Services manage and promote the university’s open access research and data repositories, support researchers with open access publishing, and work with the Research and External Engagement Department to understand and comply with funder and government open research policies. You will primarily work with colleagues to promote, support and develop work in this area.
Tasks in this role could include:
- Checking items added to the university’s open access repository to ensure alignment with the university's Research Publications Policy, funder policies, or appropriate publisher policies.
- Liaising with research staff and students to support their use of the university’s research repository.
- Answering first and second line enquiries relating to open research, including triaging queries in the Open Research Service team mailbox.
You will use the University’s repositories on Worktribe and ePrints in your day-to-day work and will develop knowledge of these systems in the context of making research openly available for others to access.
In both these roles you will help to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across the service area and embrace the University’s commitment to anti-racism and achieving inclusive and equitable environments for all.
