Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Nanopore Chemistry to join the Qing Laboratory for a period of 12 months under the supervision of Professor Yujia Qing.
The Qing laboratory brings together expertise in protein biochemistry, organic chemistry, molecular genetics, and biophysics, with much of its work centred on membrane proteins, particularly channels and pores. The group investigates both the fundamental properties of these proteins and their applications in biotechnology. A long-standing focus of the laboratory is the engineering of protein nanopores for the detection of small molecules and biopolymers, contributing to the advancement of next-generation analytical technologies.
The successful candidate will play a leading role in developing and refining existing and novel tools to enable nanopore characterisation of protein targets and other analytes. The role requires independent management of research and associated administrative activities, including small-scale project coordination to ensure timely delivery of objectives. The post holder will design and adapt scientific techniques and experimental protocols, test hypotheses, and analyse complex datasets drawn from a variety of experimental approaches, refining research directions as appropriate.
In addition to driving their own research programme, the appointee will contribute to the generation of new research ideas and funding proposals, conduct thorough and systematic literature reviews, and prepare high-quality publications for peer-reviewed journals. The role also involves collaborative preparation of scientific reports, journal articles, and conference presentations, as well as representing the research group at seminars and external meetings. The successful candidate will use specialist laboratory equipment and act as a source of technical expertise within the group, providing guidance to less experienced researchers, including postdoctoral scientists, research assistants, technicians, and doctoral and project students. Active participation in collaborative projects and journal club meetings is expected, and there may be opportunities to contribute to teaching at undergraduate and graduate level.
Applicants should hold a relevant PhD/DPhil, or be close to completion, together with appropriate research experience. Essential expertise includes recombinant protein expression and purification of membrane protein targets, and the application of high-throughput purification methods using nanodisc technology. Candidates should have experience characterising membrane proteins using techniques such as circular dichroism, negative stain electron microscopy, and nano differential scanning fluorimetry, alongside experience in biochemical studies of enzymes and molecular cloning techniques. The ability to manage independent research, contribute to publications and presentations, generate innovative research ideas, and support funding development is required. Excellent communication skills are essential, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and findings, and represent the research group effectively in academic settings.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the interface of nanopore chemistry, membrane protein biophysics, and biotechnology within a collaborative and ambitious research environment.
The closing date for applications is 12noon on 25th February 2026. Please upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.
