Welcome to Linnaeus University! Here you'll meet 2 200 staff members and 40 000 students, all united in following the vision to set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development. With us, research and education are conducted with an eye towards the future. Our proximity to the business world, both locally and globally, gives us a wide reach and the ability to create change that makes an impact. All that's needed is a place where ideas have the space to meet and grow. That's what we've created – and you are invited.

Change starts here!

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology.

The Linnaeus University centre in Ecology and Evolution in Microbial Model Systems (EEMiS) in Kalmar seeks a laboratory technician for studies in marine microbial ecology.

Job description

The laboratory technician will process samples and analyse data to study the response of marine microbes to changing environmental conditions and their interactions in ecosystems. Expertise in microbial and molecular techniques is essential for studying distribution, diversity, function and response of populations. The laboratory technician will contribute with generating novel high-quality data to address research gaps in the field.

Work tasks include sampling, handling, and preparation of nucleic acid samples from environmental samples. Nucleic acid extractions: DNA and RNA, quantification and quality controls after extraction. PCR and qPCR and preparations for sequencing. Use of flow cytometry to assess abundances of phytoplankton and bacterial populations. Measurements of biogenic silica from environmental samples.

The research project is part of the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) at Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology.
