Position overview
Starting ideally in May 2026, Professor Manuel García-Santana seeks to hire a part-time research assistant for his ERC-funded research project. The chosen candidate will build and operate large-scale data collection pipelines from web sources (full details in sections below).

Principal Investigator
Professor Manuel García-Santana (PhD CEMFI) is a tenured Associate Professor at Pompeu Fabra University, Affiliated Professor at the Barcelona School of Economics, CREI Research Associate and CEPR Research Fellow. Since 2024 he is co-leader of CEPR-STEG Theme 5: The Role of the Public Sector. At present he serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of International Economics and the Journal of the Spanish Economic Association.
He is an applied macroeconomist with interests in trade, growth and development. His research focuses on understanding how trade, government policies, and market distortions affect aggregate productivity and welfare by changing the way resources are allocated across firms.

Job description
Building and operating large-scale data collection pipelines from publicly available web sources. The chosen candidate will write production-grade scraping code and integrate AI-assisted extraction to achieve high precision in identifying and structuring information from heterogeneous, frequently changing pages. The role requires strong software engineering fundamentals and a focus on efficiency, reliability, and data quality at scale.
Reporting line: this position reports to the principal investigator of the project.
REQUIREMENTS
EXPERIENCE
1. Previous positions as a research assistant in academia.
2. Experience in data collection, AI-assisted web scraping, data cleaning, econometric analysis and programming.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in Economics. Ideally currently enrolled in a PhD program in Economics.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE
- Scientific software: Advanced or proficiency command of Python, Matlab, Stata, R, QGIS. Version control and debugging is a plus.
- Language: Advanced or proficiency level in English, both spoken and written.
Expected remuneration
Annual gross salary: 25826,42 euros.
Group and level: Group 1, level F
Working hours: Part-time, 17.5 hours/week
