1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) for a PhD student

 

1 Research Fellowship(s) (BI) is(are) open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the project “WISE: Women In Science Explorations. Amateur Women Contributions to Natural History and Astronomy in Portugal (1851–1974)”, “COMPETE2030-FEDER-00694300; Lisboa2030-FEDER-00694300; 2023.17102.ICDT”, “DOI: https://doi.org/10.54499/2023.17102.ICDT ”, co-funded by Lisboa2030, Programa Inovação e Transição Digital (COMPETE2030), Portugal2030 and the European Union, and by National Funds through Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., under the following conditions:

 

  • Scientific Area: History of Science and Technology, or other fields.
     
  • Admission requirements: Master’s concluded.
     
  • Additional optional skills and qualifications: Experience in researching archives and collections; knowledge of how to use audio and video equipment; knowledge of website maintenance and the use of social media; experience in supporting co-creation and participatory workshops; experience in participating in science communication activities; user-focused IT skills.
     
  • Contracting requirements: Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas, if applicable. Enrolment in  PhD course.
     
  • Work plan: Participation in the project’s general activities, with a particular focus on research tasks involving archives and bibliographic databases, assisting with the transcription of information, supporting the conduct of oral history interviews and their transcription, maintaining the project website, and managing social media (Instagram and LinkedIn), analysis of website traffic, social media interactions and event attendance rates, and participation in the project’s dissemination, communication and engagement activities. The work plan includes carrying out tasks at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon.
     
  • Legislation framework: Research Fellowship Holder Statute, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current version and the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, in its current version  (Reg. 950/2019 published in DR on 16th  December: https://dre.pt/application/file/a/127230968 ,  or at the FCT website: https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt ), and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation, as approved on 12th May 2020 (available at Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da FCiências.ID ).
     
  • Place of work: The work will be developed at the CIUHCT – Interuniversity Center for the History of Science and Technology, Facukty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Professor Cristina Luís.
     
  • Fellowship duration: This position is initially opened for 3 months due to start in May 2026. The fellowship contract may be potentially renewed for 18 months, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation. 
     
  • Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to 1359,64€, according to table values of the fellowships awarded directly by the FCT, IP. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, if not covered by any other social protection scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social.
    The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
     
  • Evaluation and selection process: Candidates will be assessed by 
    a) Curriculum assessment (50%); 
    b) Motivation letter, clearly outlining experience relevant to the Additional optional skills and qualifications (preferential factors) (15%); 
    c) Demonstration of experience in researching archives and bibliographic databases (20%); 
    d) Demonstration of experience in website maintenance and the use of social media (5%); 
    e) Demonstration of experience in science promotion and outreach activities (10%); 
    If the jury considers it necessary, an interview may be conducted with the 5 (five) best candidates based on the sum of criteria a) to e). If an interview takes place, the sum of the evaluations obtained in evaluation criteria a) to e) will correspond to 90% of the final classification, and the interview will correspond to 10%.
    Applicants whose application is scored with a final classification of less than 80 points are not eligible for granting a fellowship.

  • Time limits for the appeal procedure: In case of negative decision, the candidates have 10 business days, after the date of announcement of the results of the candidates evaluation, to pronounce their disagreement in accordance with the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. Appeals against the final decision may be submitted to the Administration Board of FCiências.ID (fciencias.id@fciencias-id.pt ) within 15 business days after the notification date.

    Note 1: The documents that prove the entitlement of the academic qualifications and diplomas can be dismissed during the application period and replaced by a declaration on their honour from the applicant (Minuta PT , Minute EN ). Their delivery is mandatory for the fellowship contractualization.
