Associate Professor II in American literature at the Department of Foreign Languages

We are seeking a motivated and academically strong candidate for a fixed-term position (secondary position, 20 %) as Associate Professor II in American literature at the Department of Foreign Languages. The fixed-term period is two years from commencement. The planned starting date is set to the 1 August 2026, or as agreed upon.  

Appointment to a position as Associate Professor II requires that the applicant holds a primary position of at least 50 percent with an employer other than the University of Bergen for the duration of the fixed-term period. 

About the Department

The Department of Foreign Languages offers nine study programmes: Arabic, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Spanish Language and Latin American Studies, and German. Within these fields, research is conducted on languages, literatures, history/society, and didactics. The department has approximately sixty permanent academic staff members, about twenty PhD and postdoctoral positions, and eleven administrative employees. 

English is the largest subject area at the department, with fourteen permanent academic staff members and several PhD candidates. The positions are distributed across the disciplines of literature (American and British), linguistics, and didactics.

Work tasks

The person appointed to the position will be responsible for supervising master’s students writing their theses, as well as some examination work (written and oral assessment). Other academic and administrative duties may be assigned within the scope of the position’s workload.

The languages of instruction are English and Norwegian.

Qualifications and personal qualities

The applicant must have:   

  • Research competence in English, in the field of literature or American studies, equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.   
  • Relevant professional experience from teaching in higher education
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Fluency in written and spoken Norwegian
  • Experience from supervision of students at master’s level

It is an advantage to have:

  • Expertise in English/American literature didactics
  • Experience from research and/or teaching in the field of American literature and culture

Collaboration skills, communication skills, and the ability to engage students in the learning process will be emphasized. Personal qualities will be emphasized in the assessment of applicants.

  • A gross annual salary of NOK 757 600-785 000 in a full-time position (code 1011). Further salary increases will be based on seniority in the position. A higher salary may be considered for particularly qualified applicants.
