Further Information

The LinSol project addresses a novel solar water heating system suitable for buildings having limited roof space, such as in densely-populated areas as in the case of the Island of Malta. Urban challenges may also include aesthetic restrictions and technical issues, such as long piping runs and shared roof ownership in flats, leading to limited application of traditional thermosiphon solar heater systems. To overcome these barriers, the project proposes a novel, visually-unobtrusive solar collector tailored for apartments and sensitive urban environments. The concept system aims to match the performance of existing technologies while being more space-efficient and cost-competitive. By the LinSol project’s conclusion, a working prototype will be developed to Technology Readiness Level 7, with plans for local production and international marketing. The RSO/s will be responsible for the execution of a number of tasks related to LinSol and other research projects presently being undertaken by the Institute for Sustainable Energy. Further information may be obtained from the Project Leader, Professor Luciano Mule’ Stagno at luciano.mule-stagno@um.edu.mt .

The main duties and responsibilities of the appointee/s will consist of the following:

  • research and development activities related to the project;
  • produce deliverables, write technical documentation, and prepare related reports within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description of the Grant Agreement;
  • work on the project workplan sub-tasks, which, taken together, meet all the project objectives on time;
  • work flexible hours, so long as the pre-agreed sub-tasks are delivered on time and to acceptable standards, while keeping records of the actual time taken, on a task-by-task basis;
  • keep detailed progress reports and abide to all the conditions imposed by the project’s Grant Agreement;
  • assist in the dissemination process with the relevant stakeholders via workshops/seminars and work with other research officers to jointly prepare publications and/or patents;
  • organise and attend regular project internal meetings and consortium meetings;
  • travel and attend meetings/conferences as the need arises;
  • assist in the preparation and writing of scientific publications, and
  • perform any other project-related task as instructed by the project coordinator and key experts.

The appointee/s will be expected to work primarily at the University Campus in Marsaxlokk and/or at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the Project leader.

The selection procedure will involve:

  • a.   scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application).
  • b.  shortlisting; and
  • an interview and/or extended interview.

The post is for a period of 24 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
