Applications are invited for a Research Support Assistant (RSA) or Research Support Officer (RSO) to carry out duties in relation to the Max Planck Society and ERC-funded ISLANDLAB project at the University of Malta. The project is led by Prof. Eleanor Scerri (Department of Classics and Archaeology, Faculty of Arts, University of Malta). The RSA/RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Classics and Archaeology, within the Faculty of Arts.

Applicants should have a BA degree in Archaeology, or related fields (e.g., Anthropology, Biology, Geology, Geography, etc.), ideally with experience working on faunal assemblages and handling bones/fossils, and curating finds.  Candidates who are in the final year of the degree, may also apply and, if successful, will be initially employed as RSA.

The post carries an initial remuneration per annum, inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustments, of €18,762 (RSA) or €27,207 (RSO I).

Further Information

The ISLANDLAB project is conducting research investigating the Quaternary fauna and environments of the Maltese Islands.

The candidate’s job will focus on supporting the scientific research being carried out by the projects:
●    Clean, consolidate, and sort osteological/faunal remains;
●    Assist with osteometric analyses, and data entry/collection;
●    Undertake project related administration, including cataloguing finds, photographing, labelling finds, and maintaining related spreadsheets and databases;
●    Maintain a record of the location of samples that are borrowed for study from the stores;
●    Coordinate with other team members the shipment of samples/any relevant documentation or packages by courier to scientific partners;
●    Conduct searches and/or research for samples/documentation within our facilities and at partner institutions;
●    Conduct relevant research for scientific papers to support project principal investigators (PIs) when required to do so;
●    Maintain good and regular channels of communication and reporting to project PIs, and other participating project staff based at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology and the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Malta;
●    Proactively maintaining research/lab supplies, and at short notice, and delivering them to other researcher officers and investigators
●    Participate in university/public outreach events if/when needed to do so; and
●    Endeavour to contribute towards team cohesion with a respectful, friendly, open and proactive attitude.

The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

The selection procedure will involve:
●    Scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
●    Shortlisting; and
●    An interview and/or extended interview.

The post is for a period until 30th November 2027, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
