[The position]
The Algebraic Combinatorics and Fundamental Physics Unit , led by Matteo Parisi, investigates new combinatorial and geometric structures underlying quantum field theory. The group seeks to elucidate how scattering amplitudes and quantum observables arise from total positivity and positive geometry, connecting algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, and high-energy physics .
We invite applications for postdoctoral positions to join this interdisciplinary program. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on topics such as cluster algebras, amplituhedra, Landau analysis, Feynman integrals, and related aspects of algebraic combinatorics and geometry in fundamental physics and cosmology. Candidates from pure or applied mathematics, theoretical physics , and related areas are encouraged to apply. Appointments are expected to commence in or after April 2026 and are offered for two years , with the possibility of renewal . The positions are particularly suited for researchers—whether early in their career or more senior—seeking to develop an independent research profile at the interface of mathematics and physics.

[Responsibilities]

  • Conduct high-quality research in algebraic combinatorics, geometry, or high-energy physics aligned with the themes of the Unit.
  • Collaborate actively within the Unit and OIST, as well as with external researchers, to foster interdisciplinary and international exchange.
  • Present and disseminate research results through publications and presentations at seminars and conferences.
  • Help shape the intellectual life of the Unit by contributing to seminars, workshops, mentoring, or collaborative initiatives, and by engaging in community or outreach activities when appropriate.

    (Required)

  • PhD in mathematics, physics, or a closely related field by the start date.
    • (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated research expertise in one or more of the following areas: algebraic combinatorics, applied algebraic geometry, non-linear algebra, discrete geometry (including total positivity, cluster algebras, amplituhedra, and positive geometry), and high-energy physics (including scattering amplitudes, cosmology, Landau analysis, and Feynman integrals).
  • A strong record of research excellence, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research environment.

    Expected Annual Salary: 4.5M-5.9M yen + Benefits (e.g. 80% housing allowance)
