THE ROLE

The iCub Tech Facility (https://www.iit.it/research/facilities/icub-tech ) at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is looking for an Electronics Engineer to contribute to the next generation of humanoid technologies developed at IIT, driving the evolution of the iCub platform and its hardware systems toward new horizons.

The candidate will work on the electronics design for a new generation of humanoid robots, as part of a multidisciplinary team in which mechanical, electronic and control engineers collaborate in tight synergy to achieve the goal. For this reason, the ideal candidate will be willing to learn the basic of all this related fields, to ensure the appropriate integration of her/his work with the rest of the team.

We are seeking someone with solid technical foundations and a genuine interest in working hands-on with real hardware. The role involves a mix of design, prototyping, testing, and integration activities, and suits candidates who enjoy moving between analysis, experimentation, and collaboration with colleagues. Curiosity, initiative, and a practical engineering mindset are particularly valued.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • MSc in Electronics, Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience in electronics design (analogue, digital, power, motor, PCB design and fabrication, EMC/EMI).
  • Experience with embedded systems and microcontrollers (e.g. STM32).
  • Familiarity with communication busses such as ETHERNET, CAN, SPI, and I2C.
  • Confidence in prototyping tasks (wiring, soldering, assembly, instrumentation usage).
  • Collaborative, Proactive attitude.
  • Good written and spoken English.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Experience in debugging boards and electronic systems: wiring, use of oscilloscopes, multimeter, solder station etc.
  • Experience in programming languages such as C/C++ and Python;
  • Experience with ECAD tools (Mentor Graphics or comparable).
  • Experience with circuit simulation tools (LTspice, PSpice or similar).
  • Familiarity with programmable logic devices (e.g. FPGA or CPLD).
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (e.g. FreeRTOS or similar).
  • Experience with Git or other version control systems.
  • Documentation and technical writing skills (design reports, test plans, hardware notes).
  • Basic understanding of mechanics, control systems, and robotics fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with MCAD tools or multidisciplinary co-design workflows.
  • Experience with model-based engineering tools such as MATLAB and Simulink.
