The Department of Industrial Engineering within the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland, seeks applicants for a full-time Assistant Professor position in Industrial Engineering.

According to the regulation of the University of Iceland , the duties of academic staff are divided into three main areas: research, teaching, and administration.

Main tasks

  • Research and teaching in industrial engineering, with emphasis on operations management and related fields, such as production systems, supply chain management, and operations research
  • Supervision of graduate student projects
  • Development of courses and teaching within the field, particularly in operations management and related areas
  • Administrative duties, such as participation in committees
  • Promoting the programme

Skills/Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering or a closely related field
  • Research activity in the field of Industrial Engineering
  • Experience in university-level teaching
  • Experience in course development, laboratory teaching, and supervision of student projects is preferred
  • Experience in operations management, production systems, supply chain management, or operations research are desirable
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and convey knowledge effectively
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Experience with participating in international research projects is an advantage
  • Ability to teach in Icelandic is an advantage. It is required that, within four years from the date of appointment, the employee has attained at least B1 level in Icelandic. The University of Iceland offers support to help employees acquire the necessary language skills.

The selection process will emphasize identifying a candidate whose expertise and background best fit the current circumstances and needs of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.

Wages according to the current collective agreement by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and Félag háskólakennara.
 

The tentative starting date is August 4th, 2026 or by agreement.

The position will be filled for a term of five years, with the possibility of a permanent appointment thereafter, cf. paragraph 3, Article 31 of the Rules of the University of Iceland No. 569/2009.

The processing of applications, evaluation of candidates' qualifications, and appointment to the position shall follow the provisions of Act No. 85/2008 on Public Universities and the Rules of the University of Iceland No. 569/2009.

  • A report on research work and other professional work undertaken

  • Information on potential referees who may be contacted 
  • The application must indicate which of the applicant's publications, up to eight in total, are considered most significant with regard to the position in question. Applicants should submit only these publications with their application or provide information on where they are electronically accessible. If a submitted work has multiple authors, applicants must clarify their individual contribution to the work.
