Specialist (Artificial Intelligence and Language Technologies)

Duties 

The appointee will advance the Department’s AI vision in language teaching and learning, aligning with the University’s commitment to leadership in AI-enhanced education and research.  He/She will be required to:

(a)    support the design, implementation, and evaluation of AI-related initiatives in teaching, learning, research, and knowledge transfer within the Department;

(b)    scout, assess, and introduce emerging AI hardware and software tools and platforms relevant to communication, language education, writing instruction, and academic productivity;

(c)    support, maintain and upgrade legacy systems by transforming them into AI-based applications, dashboards, or prototypes to support departmental operation and foster innovation;

(d)    assist in managing AI-enhanced research projects, including procurement and model deployment across various hardware and software platforms, while collaborating with departmental staff;

(e)    lead user training, documentation, and outreach to build internal AI capabilities and increase the visibility of their impact;

(f)     liaise with internal units to ensure alignment with institutional AI directions; and

(g)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.

The appointee may be required to work outside normal office hours for activities organised by the University and/or the Department.

Qualifications 

Applicants should: 

(a)    have a recognised degree or higher diploma in Computing or Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, Language/Education Technologies, Digital Humanities, or a related discipline, with at least three years of relevant experience;

(b)    demonstrate a strong interest in and experience with AI hardware and software applications in education, communication, or the humanities—ideally with hands-on experience in large language modelling such as chatbot fine-tuning, or the application and development of custom AI tools;

(c)    possess strong technical literacy in emerging AI hardware, software tools and APIs, and be adept at working across both low-code/no-code and scripting environments;

(d)    preferably have experience in research support, including project coordination, data annotation, evaluation, and impact reporting, as well as knowledge of maintaining research-related application software such as Qualtrics, SPSS, MAXQDA, Wmatrix, NVivo, Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA), etc;

(e)    have excellent interpersonal, communication, and technical skills, with the ability to translate complex AI concepts into accessible solutions for diverse stakeholders;

(f)     possess knowledge of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Neural Processing Units (NPUs), as well as their well-suited hardware products; 

(g)    have knowledge of Windows OS, IIS, Office 365, MacOS and Linux;

(h)    have knowledge of application development tools built with AI agents, such as Visual Studio     Code;

(i)     have knowledge of online meeting software with AI capabilities such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc;

(j)     be proactive, flexible, and visionary, with a collaborative mindset and strong initiative in identifying and pursuing new opportunities, and the ability to work effectively as a team player; and

(k)    have proficiency in both written and spoken English and Chinese.

Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
