Student assistant in the field of high-speed drives for laser material processing

Updated: 6 days ago
Location: Aachen, NORDRHEIN WESTFALEN

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, we may not be developing lightsabers to fight the dark side of the force, but our innovationsoften sound like something out of science fiction. That’s because we’re shaping the technologies and processes for the future of digitalmanufacturing, packaging and scanning technology, and many other laser-based applications, such as 3D printing.

At Fraunhofer ILT, a novel, compact technology for the automated deflection of laser beams has been developed, enabling the use of high-power laser sources in industrial production processes. Here, you will develop the control system for a novel, compact technology for the ultra-fast deflection of laser beams. In doing so, you will make high-power lasers suitable for industrial use, for applications such as 3D printing and laser marking. Your control algorithms will determine the dynamics, precision and stability – directly measurable in the laboratory.

Why this is exciting for you: You can apply your knowledge of control engineering directly to production-oriented applications, observe how your algorithms work live within the system, and contribute to industrial collaborations and high-impact topics.

Be part of change

  • You will work on the design, simulation, and testing of digital control concepts (e.g., using MATLAB/Simulink or Python)
  • You will implement these on FPGA boards and evaluate them in terms of dynamics, stability, precision, and computational complexity
  • Your goal is to develop real-time software and test scripts in C/C++, Python, and MATLAB
  • You will create graphical user interfaces for user-friendly tests
  • Commissioning and validation on optical laboratory setups are also part of your responsibilities

What you contribute

  • You are studying mechatronics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field
  • You have a solid understanding of control engineering
  • You have programming experience in at least one language such as Python, MATLAB, C++, or C
  • Ideally, you already have some experience with VHDL as well as FPGA or microcontroller programming
  • Team spirit, an interest in applied research, and very good German or English skills round out your profile

What we offer

👥Team spirit: Creative and interdisciplinary working environment, highly motivated team of experts, flat hierarchies, and informal culture.
🖥 Workplace: Excellent range of machines and equipment.
💪 Involvement: Independent project work and room for innovative ideas in applied research.
🧘 Work-life balance: Benefit from flexible working hours based on trust.
