at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
We are inviting applications for the position of full professor in the area of microstructure analytics, to be filled as soon as possible.
The fields of activities will encompass developments in new methods and techniques in electron microscopy, as well as applications in a broad range of areas from solid state physics to materials science.
Method development may address improvements in imaging and analytical techniques in a range of electron microscopy instrument classes coupled with advancements of modern software tools like machine learning. A special emphasis will be placed on the correlative combination of the experimental capabilities of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro analysis (EPMA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the MicroCT- and NanoCT-instrumentation installed in the analytical laboratory at the Research Centre CARL of RWTH.
The position involves participation in the board of directors of the Ernst Ruska-Centre (ER-C) competence platform, which is jointly operated by Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University, as well as ac-cess to the existing ER-C infrastructure within the framework of the applicable agreements.
The leadership role in the GFE as a central scientific facility of RWTH requires experience in a range of applications of electron microscopy in solid state physics and materials science. This may include metallic and ceramic structure materials, materials for future information technology, in particular quantum information and neuromorphic computing as well as 2D-materials. Further activities may encompass materials for the energy transition including battery materials, membrane materials and catalysts for fuel cells and electrolyzers.
The requirements include a doctoral degree and additional research experience, such as a habilitation (postdoctoral lecturing qualification) or equivalent achievements gained as a university researcher or professor or in a research position outside academia. Teaching ability and dedication are essential and the application should include proof of this. Fluent German is not required to start the position but the successful candidate will be expected to hold classes in German within the first 5 years.
