Offer Description

The Biodiversa+ project “PaCE” is looking for two (2) researchers for the project, “Peace and Conservation of Ecology at Disputed Seas”. The PaCE Researchers from Germany will primarily join the work packages on nature-positive activities in the South China Sea (SCS)/West Philippine Sea (WPS) and science diplomacy and peacebuilding. PaCE in Germany is funded by the German Research Society (DFG) and the advertised position will be based at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. The two researchers will complement each other in fulfilling project tasks and respectively be responsible as well for data management and science communication.

Tasks:

The candidates are expected to independently contribute data on the interconnection of biodiversity loss and geopolitical conflict in the SCS/WPS and the role of science diplomacy and peacebuilding for biodiversity conservation in the SCS/WPS. The candidates may develop a doctoral research proposal in line with the project and are also expected to publish results in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or present the results in conferences and closely cooperate with project teams in the Netherlands and Taiwan for data management and science communication.

Skills/Qualifications

Required expertise:

We are looking for candidates with an excellent inter- and transdisciplinary background such as a master’s degree in maritime anthropology or maritime ethnology, marine social and cultural sciences, human geography, or sustainability science. The candidates are expected to have a good background in science communication, qualitative research methods, and data management. A very good knowledge of written and spoken English (at least C1 level) is a must. Identification with the university's sustainability aspirations is a prerequisite.

Desirable expertise:

We prefer candidates who have a very good knowledge of Vietnamese or Filipino languages (Tagalog or Palawan), with experience in writing scientific journal articles, with education or work experience in management of international research projects, and with intercultural experience working with Indigenous peoples and local communities especially in projects implemented in Southeast Asia. We also welcome candidates with good knowledge of environmental statistics and/or geographic information systems.
