Offer Description
The candidate will collaborate with LUX members at the CNRS-Observatoire de Paris to develop an optimised data processing pipeline for detecting and measuring very faint surface brightness in Euclid mission images.
The following four areas will be explored: the properties of ultra-diffuse galaxies; extragalactic tidal phenomena; intra-cluster diffuse light; and galactic cirrus clouds.
These measurements will also be compared with other deep-field photometric data (with hundreds of hours of exposure) in order to estimate systematic errors.
- Develop open-source analysis pipelines for extracting diffuse emission from objects with very low surface brightness. Take into account the anisotropy of the PSF at very large angular scales and the nonlinear response of the detectors.
- Design measurement robustness tests and quantify systematic errors.
- Collaborate with members of the LUX team to analyse Euclid data in comparison with deep ground-based imaging.
- Present results at national and international conferences.
The Laboratoire d'étude de l'Univers et des phénomènes eXtrêmes (LUX) is a Paris Observatory laboratory with a total staff of 120. It is located across three sites: the Paris Observatory (Paris and Meudon campuses) and the Jussieu campus of Sorbonne University. The COSGAL team within LUX works on observations using telescopes dedicated to low-surface-brightness objects (CONDOR), the physical conditions of star formation in ultra-diffuse galaxies (IRAM), detailed simulations of galaxy interactions and space instrumentation (the MESSIER project). LUX maintains close collaborations with national and international space agencies, including CNES, ESA and NASA, for the development and operation of space missions.
LUX benefits from an extensive international network of partner institutions through its participation in major projects such as ALMA, SKA, ELT, HESS, CTA, SVOM, Euclid and LISA, as well as state-of-the-art cosmological simulations.
The candidate will join the Cosmology and Extragalactic Astrophysics (COSGAL) group, which comprises 20 permanent researchers, seven doctoral students, and three postdoctoral researchers.
They will have access to the Paris Observatory's high-performance computing resources, as well as the ESA infrastructure supporting the analysis of Euclid data.
