Offer Description
The PERLE Project, carried out by CNRS, aims to construct a high-power energy recovery linac (ERL) demonstrator at IJCLab, Orsay. ERLs offer a promising way toward the development of future colliders, particularly by providing excellent beam quality while drastically reducing energy consumption.
The demonstration of high-power energy recovery (exceeding 1 MW), particularly for high currents, remains a major challenge. It requires detailed simulations of beam dynamics o study the impact of collective effects in high space-charge regimes.
The Accelerators and Ion Sources Pole of LPSC is involved in the design, construction, and operation of the PERLE machine, particularly in beam dynamics studies. The design phase is now complete, and errors studies need to be carried out to evaluate the impact of non-linear effects.
To this end, impedance studies of the complete machine must be performed, with particular attention paid to certain critical areas, such as the warm/cold interfaces and the BCOM beam separation magnet. In this critical area, three beams of different energies and trajectories, with a total stored current of approximately 120 mA, will be recombined.
Supervised by a researcher from the Accelerators and Ion Sources Division of LPSC, as well as by the researcher responsible for beam dynamics studies based at IJCLab, the candidate will:
•Carry out impedance studies of the complete ERL machine in the PERLE project. Particular attention will be paid to critical areas, in particular the warm/cold interfaces, as well as the beam separation and recombination magnet and chambers. The objective is to assess the risks of beam instabilities induced by impedance variations, as well as potential power deposition on accelerator elements and potential damage.
•Subsequently perform the benchmarking of the accelerator model from the Bmad code to the Xsuite / RF-Track codes. This work will ensure the reliability of the accelerator design.
•Could also contribute to studies of higher-order modes (HOMs) excitation in the RF cavities and to the analysis of their potential impact on beam stability (beam break-up).
The Grenoble Laboratory of Subatomic Physics and Cosmology (LPSC) ( http://lpsc.in2p3.fr ) is a mixed research unit associating CNRS-IN2P3, Grenoble Alpes University (UGA) and Grenoble-INP school, for an average staff of about 230 people.
The post-doctoral fellow will be assigned́ to the Accelerators and Ion Sources Division of LPSC, comprises 20 staff members, and will report directly to the head of the Division.
The work will be carried out under the supervision of a researcher of the Division, within the framework of national and international collaborations.
Teleworking is permitted in accordance with the provisions set out in the LPSC's internal regulations.
The successful candidate will be offered training and support to develop their skills.
The post falls within the field of the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST) and therefore, in accordance with the regulations, requires that your appointment be authorised by the competent authority at the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).
