Offer Description

France has recently begun the construction of a major nuclear reactor called ITER. Numerical simulations play a crucial role, as they help avoid costly or unnecessary experiments by providing a better understanding of the physical phenomena related to plasma confinement.

In toroidal geometries, such as those found in tokamaks, particles gyrate around magnetic field lines while their guiding centers drift along the curvature of the field. High‑order elements are often used for plasma simulation, but they remain insufficient to handle the complexity of magnetic‑field anisotropy without relying on field‑aligned meshes.

Our objective is therefore to ensure that mesh elements are aligned with the magnetic field lines in order to reduce errors in regions with strong anisotropy, improve numerical stability, and accurately reproduce the underlying physics. We will develop a posteriori estimation tools to obtain error indicators that will guide mesh adaptation. These indicators must be specifically designed to account for the anisotropy of the field. Our goal is to develop an efficient, simple, and flexible approach to the problem under study.

We will rely on a fast and simple “adaptive” moving‑mesh strategy capable of generating field‑aligned adaptive meshes while maintaining low computational cost and high accuracy.

Activity 1: Software development (in C++) within the NICE code.

Activity 2: Application of adaptive mesh‑refinement methods.

Activity 3: Writing scientific articles and presenting results at conferences.

Candidate profile

PhD in Applied Mathematics, Fluid Mechanics, or a related field. Strong programming skills in C++. Experience with IGA and high‑order finite‑element software.
