Offer Description

The work will take place in CPT's Particle Theory team of which the lattice QCD group is part. The latter consists of three permanent staff (Antoine Gérardin, Laurent Lellouch, Savvas Zafeiropoulos), five postdoctoral fellows and one PhD student. The wider Particle Physics team also has as members Aoife Bharucha, Jérôme Charles and Marc Knecht.

The position is funded by the recently-granted ERC Consolidator grant of Savvas Zafeiropoulos. The lattice work will be performed in the context of the Hadstruc collaboration.
The Consolidator ERC grant: HADaSTRaLS - From 1D to 3D Hadron Structure with exascale lattice QCD simulations, is awarded to Savvas Zafeiropoulos and will fund several postdoctoral and PhD positions for the next 5 years.

The Centre de Physique Théorique (CPT) is a research unit with about 60 permanent staff and around 40 PhD students and postdoctoral fellows performing theoretical research in a wide variety of fields. Aix-Marseille U. also has strong research units in experimental particle physics (CPPM) and in astrophysics, cosmology and astroparticle physics (CPPM, LAM).

The successful candidate will join the lattice QCD team at CPT and contribute to projects aimed at advancing our understanding of hadron structure. The primary objective of this position is to perform state-of-the-art lattice QCD simulations and carry out the associated data analysis required to extract parton distributions, including both parton distribution functions (PDFs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs). A key component of the PhD will also involve the development of novel algorithms designed to overcome current computational and theoretical challenges in hadron structure studies.

MAIN ACTIVITIES : The projects will involve a variety of activities. These include among others: lattice QCD simulations and data analysis as well as development of new algorithms for hadron structure studies with lattice QCD methods. Close collaboration with our collaborators in France (CEA, Saclay) as well abroad (College of William & Mary and JLAB, USA) is also expected as well as participation in the sharing of the results with the scientific community and more widely, when relevant.
