Offer Description

The université de technologie de Compiègne is recruiting a contract researcher for the Heudiasyc Laboratory (UMR CNRS 7253), Department of Computer Engineering (GI).

This project is funded by the Hauts-de-France Region.

Mission

The successful candidate will conduct research in the robotics area. They will be responsible for the study, development, and experimental validation of the optical localization system for mobile robots in dynamic and unstructured environments.

Main activities

• Development of an optical localization method for mobile robots operating in indoor and/or outdoor 3D environments.

• Design of a robust control architecture to ensure autonomous navigation using information from the optical localization system (development of estimation algorithms, use of observers, etc.).

• Development of a control architecture integrating data from the localization system.

• Real-time validation of the developed system.

Scientific context

In recent years, the widespread adoption of mobile robots and autonomous vehicles has been driven by their affordability and diverse applications in various sectors, including logistics, agriculture, exploration, and many others. However, to operate autonomously, these systems rely heavily on their ability to precisely locate themselves within their environment—an essential condition for navigation, decision-making, and operational efficiency.

This project aims to develop an optical localization system based on the use of laser signal scanning combined with retroreflectors placed on the vehicles to be located. This localization system will allow the vehicle to navigate autonomously in a dynamic and unstructured environment (indoor and/or outdoor).

This implies that the robot must be able to locate itself in this environment and use this information in its control algorithm to ensure robust navigation.

Work environment and context

The activity will take place within the Heudiasyc Laboratory, Department of Computer Engineering. Founded in 1981, Heudiasyc has been closely linked to CNRS since its creation and is affiliated with its INS2I institute (Information Sciences).

Heudiasyc’s research focuses on information and digital technologies (computer science, automation, robotics, artificial intelligence). Its aim is to develop methods for the representation, analysis, and control of systems subject to various criteria and constraints, whether scientific, technological, economic, or social.

Research is organized around three teams:

• CID: Knowledge, Uncertainty, Data

• SCOP: Reliability, Communication, Optimization

• SyRI: Robotic Systems in Interaction

The recruited person will join the SyRI team, working directly with the responsable.

Recruitment takes place within the project CPER RITMEA 2021-2027. The RITMEA project is co-funded by the European Union, the French State, and the Region Hauts-de-France.
