Application process open *

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  • The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  • The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  • The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  • The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  • The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)
  •

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Institute’s Advanced Renewable Energy Systems (ARES) Group of EEWRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas Campus.

The successful candidate will contribute to the group’s computational research activities, with a particular focus on supporting and advancing the objectives of the EU-funded Solarize and IndHEAP projects, as well as other ongoing and future research initiatives.

The selected candidate will play a key role in strengthening and expanding the group’s computational capabilities for the simulation, analysis, and optimization of advanced thermal energy systems and processes. This includes the development of high-fidelity multiphysics models of existing research infrastructure, as well as novel system architectures and emerging energy concepts under investigation.

A central component of the position involves the development of transient, multidomain thermofluidic system models using object-oriented programming. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining in-house libraries to enable flexible, modular, and scalable system simulations. This includes implementing component models with varying levels of fidelity (0D, 1D, physics-based, and/or experimentally calibrated), depending on the system-level objectives and research requirements.

The candidate will further develop workflows to integrate these system models with optimization and control frameworks, enabling automated design exploration, parameter estimation, and performance optimization. These capabilities will support the development of advanced multiphysics simulation environments and digital twins of thermal energy systems, including coupling with external tools such as optical ray-tracing software (e.g., Tonatiuh++) and other numerical simulation platforms.

    Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

    • Develop computational models and simulation workflows to support the design, analysis, and optimization of the group’s research facilities, experimental infrastructure, and ongoing research projects.
    • Develop, maintain, and expand in-house modeling libraries, codes, and computational tools, particularly within Modelica/OpenModelica and associated Python-based environments.
    • Conduct parametric analyses, sensitivity studies, and optimization investigations to evaluate system performance and support design improvements, including model calibration and validation against experimental data where applicable.
    • Develop co-simulation routines and interoperable modeling workflows using standards such as the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI), enabling coupling between heterogeneous simulation tools and supporting digital twin development.
    • Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and system-level multiphysics simulations to support the analysis and optimization of advanced thermal and renewable energy systems.
    • Collaborate with internal and external research partners to ensure effective technical coordination and implementation of project requirements and assist in hosting and supporting visiting researchers and collaborators in computational modeling activities.
    • Contribute to the preparation of project deliverables, technical reports, progress reports, and related project documentation, ensuring timely and high-quality submission in accordance with project requirements.
    • Initiate, develop, and lead new research lines aligned with local and regional needs and resources, including areas such as solar industrial heat, thermal energy storage, and thermally driven cooling technologies.
    • Disseminate research outcomes through peer-reviewed scientific publications, technical reports, open datasets, and documented computational workflows, and present findings at international conferences, workshops, and events targeting both specialized and non-specialized audiences, including industry stakeholders and policymakers.
    • Contribute to the preparation and development of competitive research proposals and funding applications at national and international levels.
    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across The Cyprus Institute’s research centers and external partner institutions to support integrated, cross-disciplinary research initiatives.
    • Maintain well-documented, reproducible, and sustainable computational workflows and tools to support long-term research and innovation activities within the group.
