| About the opportunity | The Faculty of Agriculture invites applications for a tenure stream Assistant Professor position with Teaching, Research, and Service responsibilities. We are seeking outstanding candidates with a demonstrated track record of expertise related to food security and sustainable agriculture. The successful candidate will commence as early as July 1, 2026. This appointment is supported by the Dalhousie Diversity Faculty Awards (DDFA). The DDFA program is a recruitment initiative designed to increase the number of faculty members from historically underrepresented groups. The program was introduced in 2011 in partnership with the Dalhousie Faculty Association and augmented through collective bargaining. This position is designated to candidates who self-identify as members of one or more of the equity-deserving groups at Dalhousie. See below for further details. The Faculty of Agriculture is located on the Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus, in Truro, Nova Scotia. The Faculty offers technical, undergraduate, and graduate programs (MSc, PhD) in agriculture, aquaculture, environment, and related life and social science disciplines, and is home to 1000+ students and 50+ professors, including current and past Canada Research Chairs. The Department of Business and Social Sciences is a diverse group of scholars from economics, business, humanities and other social sciences. The department offers five undergraduate programs in Truro and one via our joint University in Fuzhou China as well as MSc and PhD training. The department contributes to the education of most students in the faculty as well as several university wide programs such as the Certificate in Sustainability. The group is research active publishing in International Journals as well as supporting rural culture and food industries in Atlantic Canada. Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture are priority areas and critical research themes of Dalhousie University and the Faculty of Agriculture. These themes link to the UN Sustainable Development Goal #2, Ending hunger, Enhancing food security, Improved nutrition, Sustainable agriculture. The position is also relevant to UN SDG goals #1, Ending poverty, #3, Health and Well-being; #8, Decent work and economic growth; #12, Responsible consumption and production; #14, Life under water; and #15, Life on land (UN SDG (Home | Sustainable Development (un.org). The successful candidate will be evaluated on their potential to become an international leader in the fields of food security and sustainable agriculture and will be expected to develop a strong externally funded, internationally recognized research program for training graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate will be a multidisciplinary researcher with demonstrated potential to collaborate across departments and build research networks within the Faculty of Agriculture and Dalhousie University. We seek a team-player and team-builder who can forge synergies within and among academia, government research institutions, industry, civic outreach to local communities, and other stakeholders within and beyond the Atlantic Region. The successful applicant will teach courses at the diploma, undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will be expected to conduct research to include regional, national (Canada) and international scales with direct relevance to the rural, food and agribusiness sectors and publish in high quality scholarly journals. Building strong research and outreach connections with the food and agricultural industry as well as attracting and maintaining research funding will be essential. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in leading-edge research with faculty and students, to apply for external grants, to teach and to contribute to the academic life of the school through committee service and other activities.
