Research
The MONETA NAMURCENSIS project aims to update our understanding of the medieval coinage of the Counts of Namur for the period spanning from the mid-11th century – when the earliest identified coins were struck – to the first third of the 15th century, when the Burgundians came to power in the Namur region. Combining scholarly and interdisciplinary approaches, and involving collaborations in the fields of digital technology and heritage sciences, the research will focus on four complementary areas:
- A comprehensive update of the reference catalogue of Namur coins, leading to the publication of a new printed reference work;
- An extension of this in digital format, with a view to laying the foundations for a collaborative platform dedicated to the cataloguing of medieval coins;
- A laboratory analysis of a specific sub-corpus of coins, which will provide a better understanding of the production of these artefacts;
- A historical investigation proper, which will build on the previous stages to shed new light on certain aspects of coin production in Namur (area of circulation, imitation of foreign coin types, etc.). At an institutional level, the project will strengthen the expertise available at UNamur in the field of auxiliary historical sciences and reinforce the emerging interdisciplinary collaborations within the university between researchers in the humanities and their counterparts in the exact sciences.
The full project proposal is available on request from Nicolas Ruffini-Ronzani (UNamur / State Archives in Namur), nicolas.ruffini@unamur.be
