Offer Description

In accordance with section 94, para 2(1) of the Austrian Universities Act, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business at the Johannes Kepler University Linz announces a tenured faculty opening for a University Professor of Social and Economic Transformation Processes

The Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business at the Johannes Kepler University invites applications as an employee under private law in Social and Economic Transformation Processes to begin immediately. The appointment is in accordance with section 98 of the Austrian Universities Act. A faculty performance review will be conducted after a 5-year period.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate and further develop an independent and internationally renowned research profile in the field of social and economic transformation. The focus here is on the political economy of social – and in particular socio-ecological – transformation processes. Political economy is understood in a broad sense as the multifaceted interaction of political power with the economy, society, and nature.

This field of research covers various aspects of social and economic transformation, including

  • Power relations, conflicts of interest, and the institutional environment
  • Political and economic orders
  • Social inequalities and issues of justice (just transition)
  • Historical experiences and their significance for the present and future
  • Normative foundations and philosophical reflections
  • Global dependence, geopolitical shifts, and the North-South divide

The successful candidate is expected to take a thoroughly interdisciplinary approach to their research and work at the intersection of disciplines including history, economics, philosophy, political science, or sociology.

The professorship should cover a broad spectrum of methods, and the application of mixed-methods approaches is expressly welcomed as this contributes to the integration of diverse knowledge perspectives.

The successful candidate will be responsible for representing the field and further contributing to its advancement in teaching and research. Detailed information regarding the position, responsibilities, and requirements is available here http://www.jku.at/professuren .

Applicants must hold a post-doctoral qualification (Habilitation) or a comparable, internationally recognized educational qualification.

The JKU and the successful applicant can voluntarily agree on an annual gross salary above the minimum amount of € 93,986.20 as stipulated in the collective agreement. If you have any questions about the position, please contact Univ. Prof. Dr. Uli Meyer, P +43 732 2468 7753, E-Mail: uli.meyer@jku.at .

The JKU considers performance in the context of each individual's biography and opportunities. This recognizes that academic achievements can be embedded in different personal circumstances (such as partial employment or career breaks due to caregiving, childcare, etc.). In the interest of equal opportunities, the evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications thus allows for personal factors such as academic age.

The Johannes Kepler University wishes to increase the proportion of female faculty members and therefore especially welcomes applications from qualified women. If applicants are equally qualified, a woman will be given preference for this position. The university welcomes applications from qualified applicants who have physical disabilities. These applications will be given special consideration.

Prospective applicants interested in the position are requested to electronically submit a complete application to the Rector of the Johannes Kepler University Linz at bewerbung@jku.at by May 13, 2026, under consideration of the criteria specified in the job profile and including all required documents (i.e., current CV, etc.).
