The IHS – Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna is a leading non-university research institute that creates empirically based knowledge on significant economic and social challenges of our time. It delivers excellent applied basic research and impartial scientific policy advice, combining economic and social science perspectives. IHS is seeking to fill an open position in the Research Group Social Sustainable Transformation , focusing on the Resilience of Critical Infrastructures.
Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d, 30h/week)
Your work at the IHS will focus on academic research and policy advice in the fields of Empirical Game Theory and Institutional Economics. As a doctoral researcher, you will be part of a research group investigating the economics of energy, water, or blue–green infrastructure governance for resilience and transformation. You will develop your PhD research project within this broader research agenda and contribute to empirical research in the industrial organization of infrastructure utilities.
Your responsibilities
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative research to develop empirically supported game-theoretic and agent-based models
- Apply econometric and model simulation methods to analyze governance mechanisms and to study the implications for resilience and transformation
- Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences to engage with the broader academic and policy community
About you
- You have completed a master’s degree in economics or a related STEM discipline (e.g., Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering and Economics, or Quantitative Social Sciences)
- You have strong empirical research skills and experience in economics and agent-based modelling, and an interest in empirical/computational/algorithmic game theory
- You are proficient in relevant programming languages such as Python
- You have excellent proficiency in written and spoken English

The monthly salary for the advertised position is based on the FWF scheme for doctoral candidates and amounts to € 2,832.10 gross per 30-hour week, paid 14 times per year. The position is to be filled as soon as possible. The initial contract period is 3 years.
During the first year of employment, you will be released from regular project duties to focus on the development of your PhD proposal. The position is embedded in close cooperation with the University of Vienna and offers the possibility to be integrated into the corresponding doctoral program.
